The translucent glow of sunlight through clouds always makes me think of a Sunday School drawing of heaven. This photo presented itself last week as I was returning home after shooting other assignments. The fluffy clouds created a striking juxtaposition with the strong, square corporate tower and seemed to be an urban heaven waiting a block away.

Some patterns just beg to be photographed. I’ve always loved walking past this building because of its unique windows, and couldn’t resist snapping a photo the one morning I happened to have my camera with me. The windows have always made me think of lidded eyes, and that day they seemed to be just opening to greet the morning sun.

I actually took this photo a while ago but it had gotten lost in the chaos that is my photo archives. It wasn’t until I saw a similar sight, the sun setting beyond Phoenix’s skyline, the other evening that I remembered this shot. And on this, Arizona’s Centennial, I couldn’t think of a more iconic representation of downtown Phoenix than the Westward Ho.
